In a Jan.19 witness statement, Meghan Markle’s father Thomas Markle reportedly told the U.K. High Court why he released a private letter from his estranged daughter to the Daily Mail in 2019. “I was shocked by what it said about me. It was a total lie,” he said of the 2018 missive, in which the Duchess complained that he had “broken her heart into a million pieces” by giving interviews and attacking her in the press. (Meghan is suing the paper, which denies it published its contents unlawfully.) In a shocking revelation, Thomas Markle went on to say that he’d tried to protect his child by asking that only excerpts be published.
“I thought the letter as a whole made Meghan look terrible,” he said. “I do not want to attack or hurt her.” Too late, says source: “Meghan Markle is more sad than angry at this point, but there’s a sense of disbelief that she’s actually being pitted against her own father in a court of law.”
